Hi, I'm Roxy, founder of Aquarea and this forum. I've kept Bettas on and off for over 10 years now. I don't know every last detail about them and would never claim to be an expert, however i do know my stuff and can answer most questions on the subject of bettas. What i will say is i will always encourage members to add their experience and advice to any that i give as everyone is difference, just like thier bettas! It is good to gather a range of experience and advice and choose what best suits you in any given circumstance. Anyhoo!! I currently have 4 males and 8 females (I think!) All are either HM or HMPK. I seem to be into these tail types at the moment. I currently have: a black-silver dragon HMPK pair a black orchid HMPK male a silver HM male a white pearlescent green male HM (one of my favourites but is a little ill atm. ) 2 platinum white HM females a purple HM female a dark blue-black HM female a pearlescent white-blue/green HM female 2 blue/green HM females PHEW! Over to you guys now! Roxy

Hey everyone im charlie
Ive been keeping bettas for about 2-3 years now. Ive currently got 5 females and 6 males. Most are plakats but ive got a few HM's. Im curently raising a spawn of between 20 and 30 hmpk fry. They are 4 weeks old tomorrow, just starting to get metallic scales coming through which is nice. Parents were red/silver female and orange/metallic blue male so there should be an interesting mix of colours in the end I hope!
Ive spent so much time reading articles on the web about these fish so I have a fair amount of knowledge but im also learning first hand with the breeding part at the moment.
Kind regards
Charlie

Hi Paul/Charlie,
Good to have you on here. Don't you think this is much better than the Yahoo Group! I'm thinking of transferring the comps over here too. I can then make a 'sticky' of the comp & rules so i don't have to keep reposting it just to keep it visible like on the group.
Well everyone seems to have a mix of the little guys. I can't blame you either!
It would be good to see some pics of your extended family & their fry on here. I'm going to try and get some pics up soon.
Paul - Have you any idea what might have gone wrong to loose so many fry? Something got into the water? Feeding issues? etc.
Roxy

Hi Roxy Dont think it was the water checked that reguarly and found no problems with it. May have been feeding issues the microworms i bought never hatched and ended up having to feed them powdered fry food and decapsulated baby brineshrimp eggs. Paul

Ah ha! There you go! I learned this lesson a long time ago. Newly hatched betta fry should be fed Infusoria (Paramecia). Microworms and newly hatched Brine Shrimp are much too big for them! The infusoria are tiny tiny single-celled cylinder-shaped organisms. Perfect for betta fry's tiny mouths. I feed Infusoria for 2 weeks, then switch over to Banana Worms, Then after another 2 weeks onto Microworms & Brine Shrimp.
I sell Infusoria cultures on the site or ebay if you haven't got any.

I must admit with my spawn and it was in a mature tank I skipped the infusoria stage (so its highly probable that there was a good selection of micro organisms to eat for the first couple of days) and jumped to banana worms which were happyily eaten as a 'first meal' after a day of being free swimming. This didnt seem to greatly affect the fry death rate but im sure if I had fed them infusoria there would probably be a couple more in the tank maybe. I tell you what did affect the fry death rate was those two predatory insects that i found in the tank - that was not a good day. I've also had to get used to the fact that large weekly water changes are not good enough and im doing 30% ever other day now and my fish are happy and healthy. counted 30 last time i spent the time to count them. The numbers i say i have keep changing because its hard to count them properly when half the fish are hiding in the plants!

Hello! I have been keeping tropical fish for around 6 months. I keep my fighters in my community tank and all has been well as of yet. I've had some up's and down's but all in all it's been going good. I personally am not keen on the smaller containers but when you have a large amount of males then i see no problem. I currently have 1 blue veiltail male 1 colbalt blue CT female 1 blue HM female they all get on great, because their community they havn't bred but any advice would be nice, has anyone else tried community for their betta? Hi there, I'm Nicki from Kent. I am totally new to bettas. I have owned the odd male or two and a few females about 22 yrs ago, but nothing since. I have today received one of Roxy's gorgeous male bettas that I found on e-bay and he is in a 40 litre tank. I also have a 260 litre tank with a few mollies, platys and bn plecos. I have added 6 female bettas to this this afternoon. I don't know what type they are I'm afraid as I got them from my lfs. They are a variety of colours and all very pretty. I provide my lfs with my home bred bn's and they always offer me fish in return but I've always declined up until today! I decided that a few pretty female bettas would make a lovely addition to the aquarium. I'd read they should be ok with the current occupants, and all is quiet so far!

Hello Im Natalie, Iv been keeping bettas for around 2 to 3 years now, it all started off with buying a red VT from pets@home that little guy got me hooked and now i have...
...15 males tail types range from CT, DRCT, HM, HMPK, VT, SD & DT
i also have females but im not sure how many i have probably around 10 to 15 all of different tail types and colours.
I also started my first spawn in December this was a DRCT black orchid female and a CT red male and iv just been successful with a second spawn that hatched on the 9/2/11 which are growing rapidly. Their parents are HM copper female and a SD grey metallic male (from Roxy) from what i can see already the bigger fry are looking very pale white and shimmery.
Il try and get some photos up of my boys and girls so you can all see.

Hi, my name is gary, username bigfin, and I have unsuccessfully spawned 5 times. More in the breeding section. I have around 8 females, and 3 males, but will be adding more. I learned about this forum after killing one of roxy`s beautiful fish she sent me.
