I was talking to natalie yesterday about the Melano female i had for sale on ebay. she told me that she had heard that melano females are infertile. I did a little 'research' on the net and saw where she got her info from. It's quite interesting actually! From what i can gather, 'Melano' actually means 'Black'. i always thought it meant black with the dark blue shimmer. And i've been sold Melano Black matching my description.
Anyways.. The 'Melano' or pure black females are supposed to be infertile. Black lace females (or any other black with a slight amount of another colour in are supposed to be fertile.
Has anyone else heard or had experience with this? I've spawned my Melano Black pair on Monday morning so will be able to tell you whether this type of black are fertile. I'm almost positive i've spawned her before..But thinking about it, the first time i spawned her was with a black orchid male. none of the eggs were fertilised and i fear the male was infertile. Perhaps it was the female. We shall soon find out. Either by the end of today or tomorrow i should be able to tell.
I'm quite interesed in this subject. How can the colour of a fish make the female (and only the female) infertile? It's to do with the genentic make up of the fish and how the strain has been produced, but surely there must be other strains of the same colour but without the infertility issue?

Well all considered i bought the melano female from Roxie and when i went to my lfs today they had a melano male...which could possibly become mine if the customer decides they dont want it. So if he does become mine im going to try breed the pair.

Well..My melano black spawn didn't go so well. However, the male ate the eggs so i'm not giving up on them jsut yet. I'll give them a couple weeks and will try again. In fact Melano means pure black and my pair are not pure black - they have a grey-blue shimmer to them (as does your female natalie).
Let me us know how your spawn goes. It would be interesting to know.
Kind regards, Rox

Indeed she is. The black orchids i have for the import pairs are a more solid black with the blue inbetween the rays on the fins. I love black bettas! Have you tried spawning your black pair yet?

Melano females are infertile, however, to breed melano, I believe you breed a male melano to a female steel blue. You'll find most melanos have a blue shine to them. I don't know if this is colour or just the way the light refracts through their scales.

Mine too. I have a lovely male HM melano with the dark blue shimmer. He's lovely. I have a female for him too. I've just bought a reather large Fish Genetics text book for a little bit of not-so-light reading. I want to have a page on www.aquarea.co.uk dedicated to Betta Genetics. Anyone who wants to contribute to the page is more than welcome! Roxy
